One of the most recent additions to Sikkim’s list of attractions is Rinchenpong. From here, you have an amazing 360-degree view of Mount Kanchenjungha. But Rinchenpong’s historical fame stems from another source. The Lepchas, who are indigenous to Sikkim, used herbs to contaminate the water in a pond that serves as the region’s primary water source when the British sent an invasion force there in 1860, killing over half of the army. This action made the troops turn back. The pond is now known as Poison Pokhri. At 5,576 feet in elevation, Rinchenpong is well-known for its breathtaking vistas of the Mt. Kanchenjunga range, several historic monasteries, and a home Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore once called home. The region is completely covered in verdant forests, the habitat of a thriving population of butterflies and birds.
How to reach Rinchenpong
If you’re travelling by train, the closest train station is in West Bengal’s New Jalpaiguri. Guest pickups from New Jalpaiguri are handled for the hotels in Rinchenpong. On the other hand, you would obtain shared automobiles from Siliguri if you wanted to use public transportation. You could take additional shared cars to Rinchenpong from Jorethang, where these cars would drop you off. Bagdogra, located in West Bengal, is the closest airport if you’re flying. Along the banks of the Rangeet and Teesta Rivers, the trip from Bagdogra or New Jalpaiguri is around 130 kilometres long and takes about 5 hours.
